Abuse victim's book recounts road to recovery
|
Victoria Lee used to walk in fear. Years of abuse as a child left her
emotionally scarred on the inside, but on the outside no one knew. "You
walk around as a normal person," Lee said.
She raised four children and didn't realize she was allowing them to take on
all the baggage she had. "The thing just perpetuates," she said.
But, today after many years of research and interviewing people who are
victims of abuse, as well as writing a book, Lee is no longer afraid. "I finally
figured out how to get it all cleaned up," she said.
She recently spoke at a Broken Arrow Lions Club meeting about her book
"A Way Out," which documents her story as a survivor of childhood abuse.
She was featured during the Broken Arrow Arts and Humanities Council's
Lunch Box series in April.
"I was still so damage emotionally that I could pray all I wanted to, but I
couldn't believe God could take care of a certain spot in my heart," Lee said.
She said it wasn't good enough to forgive others but if she didn't confront the
emotional damage, she wouldn't be able to move forward in her life. "I could
say forgive me or I forgive you until the cows come home and I would still be
broken," Lee said.
Circumstances grew to a point, that she wondered if the next day would be
her last. "You know how many times I wanted to just check out," she said.
But growing children and their needs of having a life, kept Lee going as she
shoved her troubles a little further down.
Lee's spirituality was her anchor. "You know how you get that check in
your spirit that you really know you're not finished," Lee said.
Twenty years later she finished the cycle and faced her fears to become a
whole functioning human being.
